Mathematics is from the Greek μάθημα máthēma, meaning “knowledge, study, and learning”. Aristotle liked to define things labelled mathematics, as “the science of quantity”.

And Wikipedia tells us that some French dude, called Auguste Comte, called mathematics “the science of indirect measurement”.  The “indirectness” in Comte’s definition refers to determining quantities that cannot be measured directly, such as the distance to planets, the size of atoms or in our case, ABS employment numbers.

Some questioned our maths a few weeks back.

The table below outlines how some 17,000 new full-time construction jobs in Queensland does fit into an overall 7,700 increase in full-time jobs across the state over the same time period.

Change in number of employed Queensland residents between May 2016 and May 2017.  ABS original data. High wages here are defined by individual income over $80,000; middle wages between $50,000 and $80,000 and low wages are below $50,000 per annum.

There are winners and losers.  Pluses and minuses.  Swings and roundabouts.  And we can add up, folks!

Keen to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,
